What I Have Learned

When I started this blog a few months ago, I asked myself these questions, How will my outlook have changed after writing and clarifying my thoughts consistently week after week? What kind of learning or insight will I have?

The number one realization has been this: MOST ACCEPTED BELIEFS IN THIS WORLD ARE IN REVERSE FROM THE ACTUAL TRUTH.

Here’s how:

1. Most people believe that all annoyances, irritations, frustrations they experience, from minor to major, are problems that must be solved by changing something outside of them.

-the truth is that these disturbing experiences are actually internal warning flags which alert us to the error in our own perception about what is happening. The falsehood is that we think there is a “problem” out there to be solved instead of being grateful and attentive to the fact that our disturbance is showing us that we are looking at life in an incorrect and less than loving way.

2. Most people believe that their perceptions are truth and that these perceived truths create the thought systems of their mind. Another way to say this is that most people believe they learn by their experience.

-the truth is that we do not learn by experience, but rather our experience is influenced by what we already believe prior to what we experience. The beliefs we have and the attitudes they create, taint our experiences so that we keep perpetuating the same experiences that will prove what we already believe to be true, is actually true. Therefore there is no REAL learning at all, but merely re-enacting what we already believe.

There are instances, when we are shaken up by some experience and our whole perception is shifted….but these are few and far between compared to the hundreds of experiences we have in one day, with no change in perception at all!

Instead we can question all of our perceptions by choosing to look at the same thing with new eyes each time. This will put us in a beginner’s state of mind where we are open to new interpretations and thus real learning. The simple question to ask in each moment is, how can I see this differently?

3. Most people believe they are separate, individuals who live in a limited world where survival depends on winners and losers.

-the truth is that we are one shared energy, merely masquerading as individuals. By seeing this truth, our “individual” part of this universal energy is capable of creating exponential opportunity where everyone wins regardless if others are seeing this same truth. By seeing everyone as part of our shared energy, or as our brother, we release the blame, shame and guilt that separates and condemns, allowing us to treat everyone, including ourself, as equals. We may correct errors in ourself and others when needed but we never feel inferior or superior to anyone ever again.

4. Most people believe that their emotions, both negative and positive are caused by outside events or people, as if they are the “victim” or the “beneficiary” of what they receive in life.

-the truth is that all emotion is based on one internal choice of who we believe we are at the deepest level. It is the choice between these two identities:

Do you choose to believe you are only a body in the physical world (ego)? Do you choose to believe you are an eternal energy part of a higher source (God) whether you inhabit a body or not?

If we choose to believe we are only a body for a limited amount of time, then yes we will feel our emotions are at the mercy of the world around us, always trying to gain control as a means for our survival, physically and psychologically. If we choose to believe we are part of an eternal energy, then nothing in this world can have the power to create fear in us: no law, no person, no desire and no material thing. Nothing can drive us to feel imprisoned by our fear of either losing, never receiving or being controlled by any of these things.

These are examples of the backwards thinking I have discovered and believe is the reason so many of us are confused and frustrated. Because of our erroneous beliefs that there is something outside of us that can create satisfaction or peace, we never find contentment for more than a short amount of time, because nothing in the world is permanent.

Additionally, the world we experience outside of us is a projection or a picture of our inward condition. This inward condition results from ONE choice that affects all other choices:

Who do we choose to believe we are? Are we separate individuals that must fend for ourselves on this planet, making sure we have enough family, friends, money, education, etc. to feel safe against threat or are we an eternal energy that identifies its source as the Source of Everything (God) and therefore always safe with access to true Knowledge, true Perception and true Solutions to all problems.

Let’s choose the eternal and with that choice, life in this body and on this planet becomes so much more joyful knowing that there is nothing to lose and an entire universe to gain.

With love,
